About the Show

What happens when casting a musical goes all wrong?

Broadway, Rearranged is a cabaret-style musical production that only follows one rule: no one is right for the role.

But don’t worry. This mega talented group of singers is up to the challenge as we present a miscast meandering through musical melodies.

Thank you for joining us for this night of stories, gossip, and games as we hear some of history’s greatest show tunes as they were never meant to be sung — or were they?

Practical Information

The run time for today’s show is approximately two hours, including a 15-minute intermission.

The bar will remain open after each show, and we invite you to stay and have a drink with the cast and crew.

Directors Notes

Same words, new context

When I discuss musical theater with my friends, I often find myself in a discussion of new versus old. Contemporary versus classics. What is okay to play in 2023 and what belongs in the history books. But that is not the way I want to look at theater.

I want theater to be an ever-changing painting, with each new brush stroke adding something new to the piece. Yes, there are classics out there that can resurface again and again, but reproducing it just for the sake of reproduction is boring. When art is not interacted with, it will start to crumble. Then there is nothing to do but preserve it exactly as it is, at which point it doesn’t belong on stage but in a museum. The Sound of Music, Rent and Dear Evan Hansen are all amazing shows, but if I were to stage them now, I would need to reimagine them whether they are 60, 30, or 5 years old.

That is what we have done with Broadway, Rearranged! We took a collection of great musical songs, old and new, and rearranged them to see what happens when you sing the same words in a new context. There is a lot of gold to be mined if we dare to shake the norms and take a look at who we put on stage and why.

Casting matters, and with even the smallest of changes, a whole new meaning can emerge. That is what we have played with in the rehearsal room. Twisted gender and sexuality, but also rearranging solos into duets and trios to really get a new look on these popular songs. In some songs, the new arrangements further emphasize the original sentiment, while in others, simply changing the performer gives it a whole new meaning. It has been such a pleasure to work with this group and try to bring Broadway just a little bit closer to Copenhagen — at least our version of Broadway.

What a difference a year makes

Almost exactly one year ago, the CMTC made its debut right here at Metronomen. As founders, we were eager to test our theory: would there be an audience for an English-language musical theater company in Denmark interested in highlighting the life and legacy of composer Stephen Sondheim?

The answer, it turns out, was a definitive yes. Riding the wave of that success, the CMTC embarked on an ambitious opening season. After the Sondheim Tribute in May 2022, we presented three more original concerts: Musical Dream Roles (September), Broadway Villains (November), and Christmas Songs You’re Not Totally Sick of Yet (December).

The journey has been more rewarding than I think any of us could have anticipated. We’ve been gratified that so many of our performers (and audience members!) return again and again, and we’ve welcomed newcomers along the way — all of whom are united by our common love for musical theater and a desire to find new ways to interpret and share this challenging repertoire.

This concert marks a big leap forward for our growing company. On stage today are ten singers accompanied by a four-piece band, singing arrangements that are vastly more complex than when we started. Our goal is to continue building this community so we can keep producing shows, which we hope will include both theater concerts as well as full musical productions.

Stephen Sondheim said it best: "Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos." Thank you for being part of that attempt.

About CPH Musical Theater Co

The CPH Musical Theater Company is dedicated to its mission to bringing great musical theater in English to audiences in Denmark. Today, most musical theater repertoire in the country is presented in translation. Our belief, based on years of experience working as producers and performers in Denmark, is that audiences – both Danish and international – are open to, and even hungry for, musical theater in the original English. Through an eclectic, contemporary, and inclusive artistic model of concerts, cabarets, and revues, the CMTC aims to contribute something new to Copenhagen stages: accessible and professional-quality musical theater presented without the filter of translation.

About Down the Rabbit Hole

Down The Rabbit Hole Theatre is a Copenhagen based international theater company focused on promoting English language performing arts, innovative initiatives, and multicultural dynamics. Down The Rabbit Hole Theatre presents international theater that is unique, daring and engaging. Performances are primarily in English.

Established in 2016, Down the Rabbit Hole Theatre is led by Jeremy M. Thomas, Vice President of the board of the Danish Directors Union, with a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and over 10 years of professional directorial experience, working primarily in Copenhagen, Denmark.
