Denmark’s first English musical theater company makes its debut with a tribute concert to the late Stephen Sondheim

CPH Musical Theater Co will have its debut performance on 5 May 2022 at Metronomen in Frederiksberg, showcasing new voices and classic songs for both musical-theater lovers and newcomers alike.

There’s a new theater group in town.

The Copenhagen Musical Theater Company (CMTC) is the latest entrant to the thriving theatrical scene in Denmark. Founded by international veterans of Copenhagen stages, its mission is to perform and encourage broader appreciation of English musical theater.

While many of the CMTC company have appeared in musical productions singing in Danish, audiences tell us that they want to hear the musicals they know and love in the original language.

“All of us in the group are passionate about musical theater,” said CMTC Co-founder Rachel Kador. “But while there is incredible talent here in Copenhagen, there has been limited opportunity to showcase many of the musical theater mega-hits in the original English. So we want to create new opportunities for both performers and audiences.”

The company plans to present a collection of concerts and full productions at theaters throughout Copenhagen that showcase the breadth and scope of musical theater canon.

The Little Things We Do Together: A Tribute Concert for Stephen Sondheim

To kick off in high style, CMTC is excited to announce its debut with a tribute concert to the legendary Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, whose renowned works include Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Company, and Into the Woods (see all event details below).

Stephen Sondheim is arguably the most influential and acclaimed composer of American musical theater of the last 70 years. His prolific and intellectually daring work transformed the very nature of musicals, opening the art form to new territories that explored the unexpected and often darker conditions of the human experience.

As such, Sondheim is not particularly known for his love songs — and yet, this is what the concert will feature. While many of Sondheim’s predecessors wrote beautiful love ballads for the stage, Sondheim, through his lyrical subtext, brazenly dared audiences to delight in the journey and multi-faceted exploration of love itself.

Each song in this concert showcases a different aspect of love: passion, doubt, regret, fear, yearning, contentment, humiliation, and everything in between.

From the hilariously naive “The Boy From…”, to the achingly poignant “Send In The Clowns” to the brutally observant (and often funny in face-palming self-reflection) “The Little Things You Do Together”, Sondheim’s vast and intricate musical and lyrical variation, wit and irony is ever evident and and will be explored by the cast and crew of the Copenhagen Musical Theater Company.
